NWS has performed water conservation projects on over 20 School Systems across the country. These school systems were able to re-allocate those funds into other much needed areas.

The Challenge
Public and private schools present a significant utility reduction opportunity. They are highly populated, in use by a variety of occupants almost constantly and usually don’t have funds to either properly maintain or upgrade their infrastructure. The real difficulty is getting to a decision maker who understands the opportunity that water conservation presents. It is imperative that whatever measures are performed must be seamless to the students and the staff of the facility.

The In-depth Analysis
Water efficiency can have a huge impact on the bottom line of a school system. With increasing water and sewer rates and rising energy costs, a water conservation project can benefit the entire system by re-allocating those funds once needed for utility costs into other areas. The first step is an in-depth analysis that will allow for post installation Measurement and Verification to determine exactly what the savings will be.

The Solution
While school systems use water in a variety of ways, sometime the most significant savings can be achieved in the most basic ways:

  • Install faucet aerators, high efficiency toilets, urinals, showerheads and other water-saving devices throughout the school.
  • Construct a rain garden or native plants garden on the school grounds.
  • Install rain barrels on school grounds.
  • Place mulch around plants to reduce evaporation.
  • Install timers and moisture sensors on irrigation equipment used on school grounds.
  • Educate the students and staff on the benefits of water saving.
